Things To Do Scotland 3-10 Sep: Craft Beer Rising

Zap by Will Fitzpatrick | 03 Sep 2015

1. FOOD | Craft Beer Rising
Drygate Brewing Co., Glasgow, Sat 5 & Sun 6 Sep, various timeslots, £12 here

Providing a beery September weekend enclave for a second year running, Drygate host the sophomore Scottish edition of craft beer slurpfest, Craft Beer Rising. An annual fixture in London since 2012, it'll serve up over 150 beers from 30 local and international craft breweries, bolstered by live music and a selection of street food.
2. ART | Art Walk Porty
Various venues, Portobello, Thu 3 - Sun 6 Sep, free

A new event for Portobello celebrating the artistic activity of Edinburgh's seaside, Art Walk Porty leads a trail around various artists' studios, plus site specific art on the beach and prom, pop-ups in local shops, and mini maker's markets, with participating shops/venues including The Skylark, Velvet Easel Gallery, The Beach House, and Cove and Faver’s Candy Emporium.
3. COMEDY | Frankie Boyle
The King's Theatre, Glasgow, Thu 3 - Sat 5 Sep, 8pm, £21 here

After a couple of teasing months of 'work in progress' shows across Edinburgh and Glasgow, cantankerous bastard Frankie Boyle hits up the latter's King's Theatre for the only performances of his new show, Hurt Like You've Never Been Loved, an intentionally goading response to Compton hip-hopster Kendrick Lamar's last album, showing for three nights only.
4. FOOD | Let's Eat Glasgow
SWG3, Glasgow, Sat 5 & Sun 6 Sep, free

From all things beer (see above), to all things food, restaurant festival and pop-up market Let's Eat Glasgow takes to SWG3 for its inaugural outing – serving up food from a selection of Glasgow's best restaurants, including Ox and Finch, Crabshakk, Stravaigin, and The Ubiquitous Chip, alongside 60+ artisan food traders selling their wares for you to take home and, y'know, continue doing all the eating.
5. MUSIC | Haiku Salut
Sloans, Glasgow, Mon 7 Sep, 8pm, £8 here

Following the release of their second LP Etch and Etch Deep – an ethereal collection of ten wordless songs delicately sewn together with rich textures and melliferous melodies – the spellbinding Haiku Salut bring their unique 'lamp show' to Glasgow, taking to the stage surrounded by a light orchestra of vintage household lamps that flicker and fade when triggered by the music. Support comes from Chrissy Barnacle and Citizen Bravo.
6. MUSIC | Tame Impala
Barrowlands, Glasgow, Tue 8 Sep, 7pm, £18.50

Having spent the past few years steadily redefining psychedelic rock for a millennial audience, Tame Impala, aka the one-man studio machine that is Aussie innovator Kevin Parker, continue to tour third LP Currents – a funk rhythm-driven gem of a thing that got a rare five-stars in these very pages. Support comes from fellow Aussie Nicholas Allbrook (aka the frontman of Pond).
7. FILM | Discover Indonesia festival
CCA, Glasgow, Wed 9 - Sun 13 Sep, free

Celebrating 70 years since the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence, Discover Indonesia has its inaugural festival outing in Glasgow, with a highlight of the programme being a film showcase at CCA from indie filmmaker/sound-tinkerer Vincent Moon – who has been making short films in Indonesia for the past six years, documenting everything from rare shamanic rituals to acapella village songs.
8. FILM | Nightmares in a Damaged Brain
CCA, Glasgow, Sun 6 Sep, 7.30pm, £5 here

Strange Vice's contribution to the annual Scalarama festival – celebrating the glory days of the infamous London flea-pit Scala Cinema – arrives in the form of Nightmares in a Damaged Brain, Romano Scavolini's twisted, gory and rarely-seen grindhouse classic from 1981. Instantly notorious upon release, and swiftly classified as a 'video nasty', Nightmares will be screened from the original 35mm print.
9. MUSIC | Container
The Flying Duck, Glasgow, Wed 9 Sep, 8pm, £6 here

Making minimal techno with a stripped down, beat-orientated approach, Container is the alias of Providence, Rhode Island's Ren Schofield. Active since 2009, Schofield trailed his 2011 debut (the cunningly-titled LP) with two identically-titled follow-ups before, with more eyes diverted to his singular cause thanks to a furious reconstruction of Four Tet track Kool FM. The latest in the LP series was released through Spectrum Spools in June of this year.
10. MUSIC | The Silver Trumpet Live
GFT, Glasgow. Tue 8 Sep, 8.15pm, £8.50 (£7) here

Once described as ‘Wishaw’s David Lynch’, Enrico Cocozza divided his time between homes in North Lanarkshire and Italy before his death in 1997. 1961's The Silver Trumpet was the prolific director/producer's final colour work – he made 63 documentaries and self-scripted surrealist films during the course of his career – and will be screened at this special event in Glasgow. The soundtrack has long since been lost, but local noisemakers HAWSE (featuring Mark Scanlan, whose father Gerry stars in the film, alongside members of Telstar Ponies) will perform a new score at the screening.
