Things To Do Scotland 27 Aug-3 Sep: Electric Fields

Zap by Will Fitzpatrick | 27 Aug 2015

1. MUSIC | Electric Fields
Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries and Galloway, 29 Aug, from 11am, £30 here

After the fun of last year, Electric Fields pops up for its sophomore outing in the idyllic surrounds of Drumlanrig Castle. And – excitement! – this year we're curating our own stage, featuring sets by Blanck Mass, VesselsEast India Youth, Happy Meals, and many more (plus a secret guest), while the likes of King Creosote, The Phantom Band and Golden Teacher appear elsewhere on the day. Keep doing that sun dance.
2. COMEDY | Mark Watson
Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh, 28 & 29 Aug, 11.15pm, £15.50 (£14) here

Having made his first Fringe appearance eleven years ago, comedian Mark Watson can rightly be filed under 'Edinburgh veteran', taking to this year's Fringe for a mini two-night stint of last year's hit show, Flaws – which went on to have an 100-date UK/Australia tour including a run at the Melbourne Comedy Festival – returning to the place it first aired, bolstered by new material.
3. MUSIC | Sailor Jerry Presents...
The Record Factory, Glasgow, 30 Aug, 7pm, £5

In boozy addition to the Magners' Summer Nights gig series in Glasgow and Edinburgh, the Sailor Jerry's rum folk alight in Scotland for the last in a trio of UK touring Sailor Jerry Presents... live events, with this edition manned by Glaswegian punk locals Baby Strange, garage pop trio Paws, and Japanese psychedelic punk foursome Bo Ningen. Presumably there will also be a whole lorra rum, which is always nice.
4. COMEDY | Watch Bad Movies with Great Comedians
CCA, Glasgow, 31 Aug, 7.30pm, £returns only

Returning for a third round of shit-film-mockery, Joe Heenan and Billy Kirkwood host Watch Bad Movies with Great Comedians, this edition screening Joel Schumacher’s gloriously ropey Batman and Robin – featuring George Clooney in his first and (unsurprisingly) last role as a caped crusader – with the chaps providing laugh-along live commentary. And, no arguments, Arnold Schwarzenegger steals the show.
5. CLUBS | i AM 5.1
Sub Club, Glasgow, 1 Sep, 11pm, from £6 here

Resident i AM young guns Beta & Kappa ripen to the grand old age of five, celebrating with i AM 5.1 in their beloved Sub Club lair, kickstarting a month of partying with guest sets from a duo of acts from Bristol's Black Butter Records label – genre-traversing duo My Nu Leng and bass artist Woz (aka Ashley Westlake). Celebrations continue with i AM: 5.2 on 8 Sep, with Daniel Avery on guest duties.
6. FILM | Joey Huertas
CCA, Glasgow, 2 Sep, 7pm, £3.40 (£2.40) here

Creatively active since the early 90s, the CCA present a showcase of work by film artist Joey Huertas (aka Jane Public) – who divides his time between social work in psychiatric hospitals and prisons, and his practice as a filmmaker – including a screening of early work I Loving Me, plus a selection of work from the 00s. Huertas will also be on hand for a post-screen Q&A.
7. BOOKS | Michel Faber
Charlotte Square Gardens, Edinburgh, 27 Aug, 8.45pm, £10 (£8) here

While his earlier novel Under The Skin was being made into a Scarlett Johansson-starring cinematic masterpiece, Dutch-born author Michel Faber was already quietly working away on an arguably even greater literary creation – The Book of Strange New Things – which garnered a rare five stars in our own pages. He takes to the Book Fest to discuss said masterpiece.
8. MUSIC | Supermoon
Summerhall, Edinburgh. 27 Aug, 8.30pm, £10 here

Meursault's Neil Pennycook brings his new live band project, Supermoon, to Summerhall for the latest instalment of the venue's Nothing Ever Happens Here gig series. He'll be playing tracks from his  masterpiece Oh Supermoon Vol. 1 (which "shifts from raging troubadour to whispered confessional with practised ease," according to our review), out now on Auld Reekie's own Song, By Toad Records.
9. MUSIC | Wave Movements
The Hub, Edinburgh, 28 Aug, 9.15pm, £25 here

Composers Richard Reed Parry and Bryce Dessner, who you may be familiar with thanks to their day jobs in rock bands Arcade Fire and The National respectively, gather together for Wave Movements, a special one-off event as part of Edinburgh International Festival's Hub Sessions. Here the duo will be taking inspiration from the different wave cycles of the world's oceans in a work for string orchestra and film. Go marvel.
10. THEATRE | The Money
Edinburgh City Chambers Meeting Point. 27-28 Aug, shows at 10am, 2pm and 6pm, £10

The Money is deceptively simple: there is cash on the table and players must unanimously decide how to spend it. Participants can decide to play as a Benefactor by donating at least £10, or a Silent Witness with the option to ‘buy in’ if they wish to have their voice heard. Benefactors have two hours to agree how the money must be spent. If they agree they get to spend it, if they don’t it rolls over to the next event.
