Zap | 17 Sep 2015

1. FOOD | Liverpool Food and Drink Festival
Sefton Park, Liverpool. Sat 19-Sun 20 Sep, 10.30am, £5 (£9 weekend) here

After the starter that was their spring festival, The Liverpool Food and Drink Festival returns for the main course this weekend, hosting another two days of the tastiest dishes from nearby and beyond. Among the regional big hitters Almost Famous and Lucha Libre, it's also well worth checking out the likes of Tatton Brewery and Maray. Sisters Jasmine and Melissa Hemsley of Hemsley & Hemsley are among the chefs in the demo kitchen. Don't forget it's time to vote in The Skinny Food and Drink Survey 2016!
2. ART | Abandon Normal Devices
Grizedale Forest, Lake District. Fri 18-Sun 20 Sep, times vary, free

Abandon Normal Devices heads to the beautiful Grizedale Forest for their annual festival of new cinema, digital culture and art. Turning the forest into a temporary laboratory for filmmakers, artists, technologists, philosophers and scientists, the festival encourages exploration of the secret infrastructure of nature's processes, while another key part of this year's programme is the rise of drone technology.
3. ART | Lesions in the Landscape
FACT, Liverpool. Fri 18 Sep-Sun 22 Nov, times vary, free

The latest FACT exhibition sees Shona Illingworth examine the complex impacts of amnesia, a condition in which the capacity to retrieve and form memory is lost, and the past is effectively erased. Lesions in the Landscape is a multi-screen installation with an accompanying Amnesia Museum that reflects on the experience of Claire, a woman living with amnesia, interwoven with an exploration of the depopulated Outer Hebrides islands of St Kilda.
4. COMEDY | Liverpool Comedy Festival
Various, Liverpool. Fri 18 Sep-Sun 4 Oct, times and prices vary here

Alan Carr and Dave Spikey are among the big name headliners at this year's Liverpool Comedy Festival, but it's at 81 Renshaw Street where you'll likely stumble upon hilarious new discoveries. Kate Smurthwaite could be one (21 Sep), with her strongly feminist comedy never shy on laughs, while self-proclaimed 90s girl Rosie Wilby (pictured) is among the highlights of the opening night. Read more of our comedy section's tips for the next two weeks here.
5. MUSIC | The Slovaks
The Old Pint Pot, Salford. Fri 18 Sep, 7.30pm, £4 here

Amid the thinkpiece doom and gloom about live music venues country-wide closing down, it's refreshing to report that Salford's about to get a new one. The Old Pint Pot — a favourite spot for Sounds from the Other City festival-goers — has been taken over and now houses a permanent gig venue upstairs, with Sunny Manchester hosting its debut post-refurb show this Friday, headed up by the satisfyingly jubilant garage rock of locals The Slovaks.

18 Sep – 22 Nov / Tue – Sun 11am – 6pm / Free

How do our individual and collective memories influence our understanding of society? This powerful new multi-screen installation reveals the devastating effects of amnesia on one woman, and the striking parallels with the sudden evacuation of St Kilda in 1930.

In collaboration with two neuropsychologists, the exhibition examines the wider implications of memory loss on identity, space and the capacity to imagine the future. Featuring an immersive installation in Gallery 1 and The Amnesia Museum in Gallery 2, showcasing artefacts exploring memory, identity and place.

6. CLUBS | Natural Sciences
Kraak, Manchester. Sat 19 Sep, 11pm, £4 here

The first of new Manchester-based label Natural Sciences late night parties is also the last to be going down at Kraak just off Stevenson Square before its closure – although we're expecting something to be surfacing in its place rather soon. Natural Sciences will be joined by Jimmy Asquith, Lobster Theremin head honcho on the decks, as well as scene veteran Steve Spandex, while there'll also be live analogue circuits from Space Africa.
7. MUSIC | William Basinski
The Kazimier, Liverpool. Thu 17 Sep, 7.30pm, £11.50 here

Drone supremo William Basinski makes an ultra-rare stop off in Liverpool. With his four-strong series of Disintegration Loops albums still some of the very finest contributions to the ambient canon, Basinski will be taking part in Art Assembly's Saisonscape series, working material around the idea of the autumn season for their third quarterly instalment of the programme. He'll be joined by local Liverpool experimentalist Kepla. Read more on Kepla here.
8. BOOKS | Another Way Now
International Anthony Burgess, Manchester. Thu 17 Sep, 7.30pm, £10 (£5) here

Mireia Uranga Arakistain, co-nominee for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, will be talking about her life as a teacher, artist, peace activist and advocate for her native Basque culture at the first Another Way Now. A series of events that will attempt to open up dialogue and create a space for conversation, this first edition will be based around the theme of 'brave choices'.
9. CLUBS | Pagoda
24 Kitchen Street, Liverpool. Sat 19 Sep, 10pm, from £3 here

A year of great parties – where you could see the likes of Glowing Palms and Al Dobson Jr for less than a pint – comes to a head for Pagoda this weekend as they celebrate their first anniversary in style. Joining them on the night is Manchester-based DJ and producer Ruf Dug, a man whose interest in outsider house and disco is best encapsulated by the hazy warmth of his superb recent LP Island, currently out on Music for Dreams. Read our interview with Ruf Dug from last year.
10. ART | Twelve
Castlefield Gallery, Manchester. Fri 18 Sep-Sun 1 Nov, times vary, Free

Having previously been exhibited at The Whitechapel Gallery, GoMA in Glasgow and MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art in Krarkow, among others, London based visual artist Melanie Manchot comes to Manchester to present new work Twelve. A new multi-channel video installation, the exhibition explores the intimate stories, rituals, repetitions and ruptures of lives spent in addiction and recovery.
