Christmas at the Mill
Islington Mill, Salford. Wed-Thu 18-19 Nov, 5pm-9pm (Wed), 2pm-9pm (Thu), free

Mid-November is reyt early to be getting festive, but we'll forgive Islington Mill, as Christmas at the Mill is always a reliably jovial affair, offering the opportunity to pick up some truly individual Christmas gifts at the same time as munching mince pies and supping something mulled. The studio space incumbents will be selling everything from ceramics to jewellery and prints, and The Northern Quarter Boys Choir and St Philip's Singing Collective will provide carols. Lovely.

Titus Andronicus
The Kazimier, Liverpool. Thu 12 Nov, 7.30pm

New Jersey rockers Titus Andronicus come to Liverpool celebrating ten years of being together, as well as fourth album The Most Lamentable Tragedy. A 93-minute epic, the new LP sees them on fine form and as verbose as you'd expect from a band named after one of Shakespeare's most violent plays. Support comes from Glasgow folk-rockers Washington Irving – listen to our premiere of new track Moscow Rules.

Liverpool Film Night
FACT, Liverpool. Tue 17 Nov, 6.45pm

FACT continues its good work in supporting the regional film community with the return of Liverpool Film Night, a celebration of Merseyside's finest filmmakers. Expect a series of shorts from a diverse array of talent, selected by the FACT team and hosted by actor and writer Celyn Jones – plus Q&As with some of the filmmakers involved.

A blockbusting booking from the good people at High Hoops sees DJ QU bringing snarling house straight outta East Coast US to one of Manchester's brightest new night spots – the lovingly restored textile mill, Hidden (pictured). Bill Ryder-Jones
District, Liverpool. Sat 14 Nov, 7.30pm

Former Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones comes to District tonight in support of new record West Kirby County Primary. A musician in love with the written word, the Wirral fella has previously recorded an album in homage to Italo Calvino’s playful novella If on a winter’s night a traveller, and is on suitably tale-telling form on this latest, too. If you can’t make the Liverpool date, he’s also at Gullivers, Manchester, the night before (13 Nov). (Photo: Andrew Ellis.)

Kyle Kinane
The Pub/Zoo, Manchester. Sun 15 Nov, 7pm

Don’t be fooled by American comic Kyle Kinane’s rough and ready delivery: behind it lies “an impressive and charming storyteller,” as our reviewer found at Kinane’s first ever Edinburgh Fringe run earlier this year. Reeling from rave reviews, he brings his show – which is “about ghosts having a pizza party” – to Manchester tonight for top drawer comedy promoters Perfect Strangers. Read our recent interview with Kyle here.

Freeze 10th Birthday Party with Nicolas Jaar
The Garage, Liverpool. Sat 14 Nov, 10pm

A decade’s a long time in the game, and leading Liverpool club promoters Freeze are celebrating their 10th anniversary in style with none other than Nicolas Jaar headlining the intimate Garage, plus the shapeshifting, physical techno of Powell. Jaar will be DJing rather than playing a live set, but given that precocious ear of his (and taste for dark, skewed dance) you can expect him to dig deep and get weird. This is a rare chance to see the former Darkside man in Liverpool.

Faktion x Project 13 presents: The Death of Rave
Secret location, Manchester. Fri 20 Nov, 11pm

After playing with Nicolas Jaar at Freeze’s 10th birthday party, Powell (pictured) continues his victory lap of the Northwest with a live turn on a fantastically punishing bill, put together by Manchester’s finest earbleeding promoters Faktion and the Project 13 label. His vital, unusual techno joins the unforgiving sounds of Vereker, Conor Thomas, and The Sprawl – a new project from Mumdance, Logos and Shapednoise. As last suppers for rave go, this is a veritable banquet.

Jo Rose
Gullivers, Manchester. Sun 15 Nov, 7.30pm

Local singer-songwriter Jo Rose has been winning hearts by the boatload since the release of his debut album, Spurs, last year, and now the Americana-influenced musician is making his full-band debut in the miniature music hall of Manchester’s Gullivers. Expect to hear fulsome arrangements of Spurs’ folk hymnals, and some new material. (Photo: Alexander Bell.)
