1. TECH | Manchester Science Festival
Various Venues, Manchester. Thu 22 Oct-Sun 1 Nov, times and prices vary here

Now finally free of the tag 'former D:REAM keyboardist', Professor Brian Cox (pictured) and stalwart funnyman Robin Ince bring The Infinite Monkey Cage, their award-winning BBC Radio 4 science and comedy show, to Manchester for the opening night of Manchester Science Festival. An absolute feast of a programme runs until 1 Nov, which will see art meet science, new tech that could open up the future and – perhaps most excitingly of all – the chance to frolic in a massive adult ball pool.
2. MUSIC | Liverpool Music Week Opening Party
The Kazimier, Liverpool. Fri 23 Oct, 7pm, £10 (£7.50 student) here

"There's no way they'll be able to top that," we always say to ourselves after each Liverpool Music Week – and then they do. The divine deconstructed techno of Holly Herndon (pictured) tops the bill for tonight's opening party; she's joined by the likes of local progressive pop chaps Outfit, post-dubstep duo Darkstar, Micachu & The Shapes and more. There's also a host more info on the rest of the LMW programme on our website.
3. CLUBS | Winter Garden Festival

5. ART | Rogue Open Studios
Rogue Studios, Manchester. Fri 23 Oct-Sun 25 Oct, times vary, Free

A vital hub for Manchester's artists across all mediums, Rogue Studios is celebrating its 20th birthday this weekend – some feat in a city that's in a constant state of flux. In typical Rogue fashion, its practitioners will be throwing their studios doors wide open across three floors to mark this landmark, withTaneesha Ahmed, Dylan Thomas and Lindsey Bull among those whose studios we'd well recommend popping your head into.
ADVERTISEMENT | The Dissolution of Percy
A searing critical exploration of the cruel gender politics that destroyed a man, made a villain of his lover and chained his sisters to a life they despised, The Dissolution of Percy tackles the events surrounding the final few years in the life of Branwell Brontë. Reflecting on our lack of moral evolution since the 19th century, the play plunges its audience into a world balanced in counterpoint between violent passions, grim pragmatism and gallows humour.

7:30pm (2:30pm Sat matinee) at The Kings Arms in Salford.
Sat 14 Nov
7:30pm at Parkside Social Club, Haworth.

6. MUSIC | Philip Jeck
FACT, Liverpool. Thu 22 Oct, 7pm, Free

Sound artist Philip Jeck's best known work, Vinyl Requiem, may be facing a rebuttal in the form of the format's resurgence in sales, but there's no denying Jeck's 1993 piece with Lol Sargent – seeing him compose for 180 record players – was an enduring influence on many within the field of sound exploration. Jeck will be performing new material through an immersive sound system, which will mix conventional surround sound, HOA (Higher Order Ambisonics) and 3D audio.
7. MUSIC | Liturgy
Deaf Institute, Manchester. Tue 27 Oct, 7pm, £9 here

Though rising through the US black metal scene, Liturgy have never shied away from criticising the genre. As latest album The Ark Work proves though, they're now at a point where placing them in the context of black metal is to do a disservice to the grandiose, skyscraping work that they're now pulling together, delivered with a knowingness to counter the bombast, which prevents it from ever becoming too much.
8. MUSIC | Dustin Wong
Everyman Theatre, Liverpool. Wed 28 Oct, 8pm, £5 here

Liverpool's premier sound exploration enthusiasts Deep Hedonia begin a new residency at the Everyman Bistro tonight with previous favourite, minimalist guitar wizard Dustin Wong. Last time out on Merseyside Wong – who has also collaborated with Bahrain-via-London psych troupe Flamingods among others – performed with eight other guitarists; expect a similar lack of convention tonight too, as he comes accompanied by upcoming noise collage artist Yearning Kru.
