Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
Various Venues, Huddersfield. Fri 20-Sun 29 Nov

Nine days of new and experimental music courtesy of the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival commence tonight with, among others, The Riot Ensemble, who'll be presenting work by respected Polish composer Jagoda Szmytka at Bates Mill Blending Shed. Elsewhere Apartment House mark 20 years of performance with a rare programme covering a diverse range of experimental and contemporary music.

Sham Bodie 2nd Birthday Party
Gullivers, Manchester. Thu 19 Nov, 7.30pm

Happy birthday to our favourite comedy and variety show Sham Bodie! The collective celebrate their second birthday tonight, and they're doing so in style having hooked in none other than three times Edinburgh Fringe Best Show nominee James Acaster (have a read of our interview with him here) to headline a night that once again sees the best of local comedy and music talent compete for attention with the singular emcee stylings of Ben Tonge and a load of free hot dogs.

24 Kitchen Street 2nd Birthday
24 Kitchen Street, Liverpool. Fri 20 Nov, 10pm

There's a few birthdays going on this week, with underground Baltic Triangle night spot 24 Kitchen Street also earning a well-deserved second anniversary celebration following two years that have seen the venue host everyone from UK grime's ascendent stars to the likes of Holly Herndon and Nightmares on Wax. For their second birthday they bring back the man who stormed their first one, with DJ Zinc (pictured) ripping up the ones and twos.

Red Eye HiFi 6th Birthday
Gorilla, Manchester. Sat 21 Nov, 11pm

Manchester-based soundsystem Red Eye HiFi are celebrating their sixth birthday with an almighty Birthday Carnival. Among the names dropping on the night are Bristol-via-Trinidad rhythm addicts Jus Now, who join UK dancehall queen Lady Chann (pictured) in heading up a formidable bill of Caribbean-inspired sounds. Nish Kumar
The Lowry Studio, Salford. Sun 22 Nov, 8pm

Standup comedian Nish Kumar calls into The Lowry as part of his first solo tour, having been endorsed by everyone from Stewart Lee to Milton Jones and David O'Doherty. Long Word... Long Word... Blah Blah Blah... I'm So Clever is intelligent and inventive without going over your head. Speaking to us for the November issue, Kumar described his show: “It’s quite political. It’s really about the idea of what being a leftwing comedian means to me.”

Cornerstone Arts Festival
Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool. Fri 20-Sat 28 Nov, times vary, Free

Among the highlights of the ever excellent Cornerstone Festival, pianist Clare Hammond (pictured) – recently selected as a 'rising star' by BBC Music Magazine – performs the world premiere of two new works for piano and film: Hände, by Liverpudlian composer Ken Hesketh, and Ed Hughes' The Nose. Hammond plays as part of a series of free events, which also features Tooth+Nail Theatre Company, who were founded in 2014 at the École Jacques Lecoq in Paris.

Brendon Burns
The Magnet, Liverpool. Wed 25 Nov, 7pm

Brendon Burns returns to a more traditional comedy touring circuit this autumn after spending most of his time on the road earlier this year taking in more unconventional venues and spaces. Liverpool will always remain a notable spot for the shamelessly outspoken comedian, however, having received death threats there five years ago for comments at a show that some locals took offence at. Nemesis
Lantern Theatre, Liverpool. Thu 19-Sat 21 Nov

A sexual and psychological drama, Nemesis comes to the Lantern Theatre, setting the scene quickly when a young man is tied to a chair, a hood over his head, while a father and daughter interrogate him. All three reveal secrets that'll irrevocably alter their lives in what is a tense and gripping play.

Kim and the Created
Big Hands, Manchester. Sat 21 Nov, 9pm

Another agreeably cheap and suitably raucous gig from the people at Tay Tay and Neck Bones & Hot Sauce sees Kim and the Created cross over from their native California, having caused a rumble there playing wild and captivating rock'n'roll. They're joined by Manchester-based punks Proto Idiot and the Welsh garage melodies of Llion Swyd.

Thundercat + The Internet
Academy 2, Manchester. Wed 25 Nov, CANCELLED

**AS OF THURS 19 NOV THIS SHOW HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL MARCH**

In a truly succulent double billing, Flying Lotus collaborator and bass virtuoso Thundercat (pictured) teams up with Odd Future members and slow jam specialists The Internet for a hot and heavy night of grooves. Both have new material to showcase, with LPs The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam and Ego Death both out this year. Except bass playing mastery from Thundercat, and some of the freshest neo-soul since D'Angelo's peak from The Internet – check out the rest of our November gig highlights here.
