Zoo Lodge

Rebecca Boey's debut play—based upon her real-life travels to South Africa—dives straight into issues of race, imperialism, trust and jealousy; making Zoo Lodge a truly provocative production.

The quick-paced play is set in a guesthouse in Johannesburg where two British tourists befriend a Zimbabwean refugee fleeing certain death. Pippa (Boey) and Ben (John McKeever) become increasingly involved within the politics of Africa when they feel the need to help Albert (Abukar Osman) and his family back in Zimbabwe.

Zoo Lodge, is thought-provoking entertainment. Boey shrewdly acknowledges that “some enmities are too deep-rooted for outsiders to comprehend” and that democracy is not an easy answer in such a politically complex country.
