Your dog could be the next star of Legally Blonde

Does your four-legged friend look “fairly bullish and robust”? If so, it could be the star of Legally Blonde The Musical as producers hold auditions to cast a local canine for the Edinburgh run of the show!

Toto from The Wizard of Oz, Eddie from Frasier, Lassie – your dog could follow in these famous dogs’ pawprints with the opportunity to tread the boards in Legally Blonde The Musical.

Producers of a major new tour of the smash-hit Broadway and West End musical based on the Reese Witherspoon comedy are on the hunt across the UK and Ireland for some new four-legged talent.

The musical’s human stars are EastEnders’ Rita Simons, Lucie Jones, who represented the UK in the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest, and Bill Ward, star of Coronation Street and Emmerdale, but Legally Blonde The Musical also has two dogs in the cast: a Chihuahua called Bruiser and another dog called Rufus.

Bruiser's part has already been cast, but the role of Rufus is up for grabs, with auditions being held all over the UK. Ideally Rufus will be played by a British Bulldog, as was the case in the film, but the producers are open to other breeds as long as they’re “fairly bullish and robust,” says the statement. “Cute and fluffy is not what we are looking for here I’m afraid.” The Edinburgh auditions take place on 17 July.

Legally Blonde The Musical is a show all about stereotypes and not judging a book by its cover and the dogs are no different in this,” said the musical’s associate director David Barrett. “So whereas Bruiser is the cute, tiny, adorable one, with Rufus we are looking for the total opposite. We are looking for a big, brutish dog that only its mother could love – preferably a Bulldog as in the film but we are certainly open to options.”

Auditions are being held at The Studio, 22 Potterow Edinburgh EH8 9BL on Monday 17 Jul at 6pm
