British Journal of Photography App Launch

Photographers with access to an iOS device, such as an iPhone or iPad, have reason to rejoice. The British Journal of Photography – a 150-year-old institution dedicated to bringing in-depth reviews, discussions, and articles about the art and its artists – has made the leap to digital portability. Tailormade for the iPad’s unique digital environment, the world’s longest running photography magazine is finally available as an app.

Maximising the features that iPad users know and love (multi-touch navigation, backlit display), the app vivifies the Journal’s celebrated repertoire of arresting imagery, elegant design and thought provoking articles, bringing the magazine to life on a digital screen for the first time.

This BJP app has been designed to give users highlights from the main print editions, together with reams of new multimedia and video content, including a moving image cover created by New York based artists Reed+Rader. Social sharing, too, is possible, thanks to built-in access to all the popular social networks. This is the culmination of nine months' research and development; the magazine has been undergoing a recent renaissance (having switched from weekly to monthly in 2010 for the first time in 157 years), and this app epitomises their progress. Gone are the days of wholly static pages and finite print space; on tablet or smartphone, the BJP app is packed full of dynamic and interactive content. And with the move to focus on filmmaking in the first digital issue, users will be able to seamlessly enjoy a combination of still and motion images. This is the natural next step in how we consume media, and BJP is riding that wave with the same compelling professionalism we’ve come to expect from a century and a half in the game.
