Glasgow, on your knees

The mark of any great metal band is their power to bring an audience to its knees - in both admiration and submission. Swedish math-metallers Meshuggah do just that - pounding and thrashing in ways both familiar and intensely original, with the devastation of the audience firmly in mind. Vocalist Jens Kidman is a gurning, demonic spectacle in his own right, often losing himself in the band's hypnotic soundscapes, twisting and flinching with every beat, like a possessed Phil Anselmo. The band have steadily carved out cult status, with a plethora of intense and high profile shows and latest album, ObZen, meeting high critical approval. This has served to further cement their position alongside contemporaries like Lamb Of God and Mastodon as one of modern metal's leading forces. Set to bring their titanic noise show to The Garage, this should indeed be a blinder. Glasgow, on your knees. [Ryan Drever]
