Flipron - The End of Summer

the bouncing, jazzy efforts of their talented pianist lighten the mood considerably

Single title: The End of Summer
Artist: Flipron
Label: Cargo
Probably one of the most unusual recent single offerings, Flipron sound a bit like Jamie Cullum providing the soundtrack for 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'. A fascination with the macabre and creepy, yet cartoonish, organ music give the band a Hallowe'en party feel, but the bouncing, jazzy efforts of their talented pianist lighten the mood considerably. It is disappointing, then, when their cheerful take on the likes of Ben Folds Five gives way to vocalist Jesse Budd slipping into an irritating guttural outburst with every minor key change. This technique is particularly evident (and grating) on b-side Raindrops... Funny and engaging, this band could have ended with a higher rating had Budd managed to avoid lapsing into his inexplicable James Mason impression. [Lucy Weir]
