Dawn of The Replicants - Skullcrusher (Remixes) (SL Records)

Single title: Skullcrusher
Artist: Dawn of The Replicants
Dawn of The Replicants original of Skullcrusher has some pretty heavy industrial beats already, so beefing it up was not an option for Irish acid-house troubador David Holmes and DFA's Tim Goldsworthy. Instead, they pare back the track to a vocal, adding a hip-hop beat that owes more to Holmes' The Free Association than LCD Soundsystem, which is a shame - the vocal is nicely pitched between Echo & The Bunnymen and Alabama 3, and would ride some slinky DFA electro well. The Curry & Rice Mix is also stripped back, with fife drums, plucked guitar and the vocal harmonies brought forward. The original simply has more bite; with its stomping NIN drums, it is an altogether spikier, more dramatic proposition. [Bram Gieben]
