Bloc Party - Mercury
It’s a risky business reviewing new Bloc Party material, given the slow burner that Weekend In The City revealed itself to be, but Mercury, I am confident, will still be the worst single they have released even if I locked myself in a room with it until Halloween. A nauseating chorus that could only be excused (at a push) had it been a remix, flanked by horns that suggest an absurd application for the new James Bond theme song and tinny, bored drums that nearly make you forget this is the same band that penned Pioneers and Banquet. It's a damn shame: not even three albums in and the Party seems pretty much pooped. [Finbarr Bermingham]

Report to moderatorThis song is hilarious.
It sounds like the boys have found out how to use a sampler and some nifty effects and sounds on a synthesizer, then shoved them all into the one song.
It starts a bit meh, becomes potentially good at the midway point, then becomes effing hilarious at the end, with all the horns.
Hopefully it's just a blip on the Bloc Party's future creations.
More like Flux, please.Posted by | Thursday July 2008 @ 17:17
Report to moderatorYeah, hilariously bad song. It sounds more like a remix than an actual song and, TO STEAL BACK SOMETHING I SAID, like they've discovered some electronic music program and taken the kitchen sink approach.
And what happened to the drummer? Is he dead? He was easily the most talented member of the band back on Silent Alarm, but Kele seems to rule the band. Pushing his turgid lyrics to the front of the mix wasn't the best idea, to put it mildly.
