Justin Nozuka - After Tonight

Tame and commercial: indicating potential, but almost too polished to make an impact.

Single title: After Tonight
Artist: Justin Nozuka
Label: Outcaste
There's something world-weary in singer-songwriter Justin Nozuka's voice, a suggestion of melancholy that belies his 18 years. Apparently he's been writing songs since he was twelve. When exactly he had time to rack up the romantic experience is not clear. After tonight, a nicely-arranged tuneful acoustic love song, is his first release from his debut album (which also promises a song from the perspective of a man stuck at the bottom of a well - that's got to be worth looking out for). It's competent and calculatedly soulful enough, but even its admittedly catchy chorus floats away on the breeze after a couple of listens. His talent is obvious, but there's something too tame and commercial about this release. This indicates potential, but it's too polished to make a clear impact. [Eve McCann]
