Malcolm Middleton - A Brighter Beat

4/5 stars
An anthem for angst-ridden agoraphobics
Single review by Milo McLaughlin.
Published 10 February 2007
This first single from Malcolm Middleton's excellent third album of the same name is an upbeat, jangly guitar anthem for angst-ridden agoraphobics: "We're an army around the country, we're all stuck in a room/It takes a lot of desperation, to make a move." The chorus details the step by step alternative to such self-imposed loneliness: "Out the door, down the stairs, through the close, down the street/On the bus, to the pub, there are people to meet" but Malcolm reckons that comfort can sometimes be found closer to home, by simply putting on a great song like this.
