Sonny J - Disastro

Album Review by Don McVinnie | 16 Jun 2008
Album title: Disastro
Artist: Sonny J
Label: EMI
Release date: 16 Jun 2008

Another of the MySpace generation of success stories, Sonny J is one of the few to successfully make it from the basements of social networking to major label schmoozing. Sonny J signed to EMI as a result of the hype created around his Can't Stop Moving track after it was picked up by Radio 1, amongst others. Understandably so, with the summery loops and vibrant soul of the track sounding a bit like The Jackson 5 making love to Lemon Jelly with The Avalanches watching in the background; its mass appeal is pretty plain for all to see. 'Quirky' is probably the best word that can describe Sonny J's work, but as with all things quirky there's only so much longevity in the idea and Disastro doesn't withstand more than a few listens. In fact, after a while it gets pretty bloody annoying.
