Paul Leonard-Morgan - Film Tales

They seemed so poignant when Matt Damon was dry humping Natalie Portman!

Multi-instrumentalist/composer/film scorer Paul Leonard-Morgan has made a dire miscalculation: film scores aren't entirely fun to listen to on their own. Ideally, they're intended to stay in the background where they help the film's narrative tug on the viewer's heartstrings. Strip away the film and you're typically left with a bunch of sappy piano lines and boring string parts. "They seemed so poignant when Matt Damon was dry humping Natalie Portman!" In addition to the standard film score fodder, the album also contains some icy trip-hop that's well crafted if not particularly distinctive. Album highlight Wilderness is a sexy track featuring Isobel Campbell and the endearingly pretty Standing Up featuring Steve Mason is another reason to indulge this for a few minutes more. There are the low points, however, such as All For You which features Esther O'Connor and orchestration that could be sampled from lift muzak. Altogether, we're not talking about a bad score here, it's just kind of dull. [Tobias Kahn]
