Colorado born Josephine Foster appears to be on an endless journey of musical discovery, an opera-school drop-out – oh the shame – she’s since produced a collection of songs accompanied only by ukulele, a collection of children’s songs, several folk-come-psychedelic rock albums and interpretations of 19th century German Lieder. On this occasion Foster and her partner, Spanish musician Victor Herrero, have arranged Federico Garcia Lorca’s popular folk song collection Las Canciones Populares Espanolas which was banned under Franco’s dictatorship for their new acoustic band, formed while living in the Grenadine Sierra.

The results are warm and lush with Foster’s classically trained and peculiar voice commanding the spotlight, with vibrant accompaniment from acoustic guitars, harps, and all manner of clicked and clacked percussion. Even if your grasp on Spanish is as deplorable as mine, there is much to savour and enjoy in its graceful, gentle sound. Another odd and admirable addition to Foster’s eclectic repertoire.
