Grumbling Fur – Furrier

Album Review by David Bowes | 28 Jul 2011
Album title: Furrier
Artist: Grumbling Fur
Label: Aurora Borealis
Release date: 15 Aug

Even without knowing the illustrious pedigree behind Grumbling Fur, from Furfather’s gently shimmering ambience it’s already possible to see Guapo mastermind Dan O’Sullivan’s hand at work. It shares the same sense of lingering unease that the bulk of what he turns his not inconsiderable attention to tends to possess but thanks to the diverse workings of Alexander Tucker and Circle’s Jussi Lethisalo it heads in a more dreamlike direction, abandoning the ghost ship atmosphere of old in favour of ethereally sci-fi leanings.

The opening handful of tracks act as mere scenery, setting the scene for the hash-hazed journey ahead , but from Sommaren Är H?r onwards things start to feel more like a solid construct. Here, jaunty krautrock riffs and sways undercut the gravel-throated growl of what seems like some Scandinavian forest-dwelling troll, before Talvi on Tulossa adopts low ministerial chants to accompany a journey through subterranean psychedelia. It’s an engrossing experience that cries out for equally absorbing visuals, so fingers crossed for a live rendition sometime soon.
