End Of Level Boss - Inside The Difference Engine

Modern and precocious metal sans pretension

Album Review by Neil Ferguson | 09 Aug 2007
Album title: Inside The Difference Engine
Artist: End Of Level Boss
Label: Exile on Mainstream
It seems that there is an insurgency going down within the metal world. With the epic guitar battles, shredded solos and mindless hedonism of the old order already blown to hell, a new sound, formed around the fundamental heavy riffing and little more, is slowly mobilising. At the forefront of the revolution stands End Of Level Boss, a band that combines the muted acumen of Boris or Sunn O))) with the droning notions of early Kyuss. Inside The Difference Engine is made from colossal riffs with tints of prog-rock and psychedelia hammered deep into the mix. It's modern and precocious metal, sans pretension. Swathed with intelligent ambiances and a thrumming, intensity that nods to the old masters, this is a masterpiece built from so many of the classic sounds of the genre, whilst standing in glaring contrast to much that the metal world has seen in the past 15 years.
