Andi Neate - Paper Animals

A curious but appealing mix of lullabies and laments

Album Review by Paul Greenwood | 15 Jul 2006
Album title: Paper Animals
Artist: Andi Neate
Label: Blue Elf
Andi Neate's third album is an eclectic collection of tracks, a curious but appealing mix of lullabies and laments that go from folky and melodic to jazzy and back again, touching on remembrances and themes of fear, loneliness and regret, all the time supported by strong but smooth vocals reminiscent of the great female singer songwriters of the '70s. Recalling the angst of Janis Ian, Neate has written all the songs herself, with the exception of Suzanne Vega's exquisite The Queen and the Soldier which makes for an incongruous but welcome addition. Of her own compositions, highlights include the sweet and wistful Little Blue and a tale of the pains of childhood, the truly beautiful Sandcars. [Paul Greenwood]
