SEØUEL – Prague EP

Single Review by Bram E. Gieben | 12 Aug 2014
Single title: Prague
Artist: SEØUEL
Label: Disorder
Release date: 4 Aug

Something has been brewing in the depths of former Degrassi frontman Tom Nicol's laboratory. As SEØUEL, the born again producer combines retro-futuristic synth riffs worthy of Perturbator or Glasgow's Ubre Blanca with processed static and mournful, angular sampled guitar on opener Gamli. The proto-industrial atmosphere, along with Das Ist's echoing vocal snatches and propulsive breakbeat, hit straight to the gut – this is satisfyingly visceral electronic music.

Prague, the title track, shifts gears with a lithe vocoder hook you'll struggle to get out of your head, sexual like rain-slick neon. Octagon's blistering, sweaty electro pulse is irresistable, packed with unlikely chord changes and skewed acid noise. But it's Rocky Push Up which is the EP's highlight – unashamedly Carpenter-esque, amped up for dimly-lit dancefloors. Reference-packed but not reverential, and moving in unexpected directions – pay close attention.
