DJ Day – Land of 1000 Chances

Album Review by Bram E. Gieben | 08 Mar 2013
Album title: Land of 1000 Chances
Artist: DJ Day
Label: Piececlock 70
Release date: 18 March

Hailing from sunny Palm Springs, California, DJ Day's first full-length studio album sees him exploring funk, jazz and lounge music through the medium of the hip-hop break. Across 15 strong cuts, peppered with laidback spoken samples, he paints a beautiful, laidback picture of his musical influences and inspirations, creating an expansive and satisfying album of rich and varied textures.

From the Bukowski-referencing, smooth funk of Chinaski's Theme, to the minimal P-funk of Mama Shelter, to the mellifluous soul of FML, it's a journey that nods to Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton, Marvin Gaye and DJ Shadow, all with a remarkable freshness, despite the well-worn feel of the sounds it evokes. As the tracks progress, you can picture yourself maxing out by the pool, or sipping drinks in a cocktail lounge, or perhaps crusing down a broad, palm tree-lined boulevard in a Cadillac with the top down. In short, if you can't afford the plane ticket to California, let DJ Day take you there.
