The Black Dog - Book of Dogma

Soma are bringing back the 'Dog's twisted and British style of electronica and Detroit techno

Album Review by Alex Burden | 12 Mar 2007
Album title: Book of Dogma
Artist: The Black Dog
Label: Soma

The Black Dog are held as key influential figures in the British techno scene, and The Book of Dogma brings together their classic albums, Parallel, Bytes, and Spanners on a double CD. Soma are bringing back the 'Dog's twisted and British style of electronica and Detroit techno. CD 2 is a lesson in old skool for the nu skool. Heavy loops repeated to trance perfection rope in touches of Nitzer Ebb, deep synths, and a busier sense of instrumentation in comparison to starker techno anthems. The tinge of acid that peppers Glassolalia and Virtual Hmmm is the sound of burgeoning careers in the 90s being inspired, and form part of The Black Dog blueprint. There is an informed sense of hypnotic build, slick clicks, deep house keyboard and synth, jazzy hi-hat, and if your limited edition Black Dog vinyl has seen better parties, then this CD is the perfect chance for a trip down memory lane. You could slam VIR2L onto a dancefloor in 2007 and no-one would bat an eyelid – it's traveled and withstood the tests of time, and any deep and minimal set would welcome its presence. [Alex Burden]
