Album title: Red Cabaret EP
Artist: Onur Özer
Label: Vakant
The three tracks of this EP are deceptively grandiose, sprawling numbers, clicking and beeping around a simplistic but highly effective rising and falling pattern that demands live mixing, but can be a little boring in your living room. 'Red Cabaret (Overture)' employs a hundred effects, but centres itself on a fuzzy diminuendo/crescendo reminiscent of space-ship effects from Blake's 7 or Dr. Who. The same rise and fall, shot through filters and sounding even more futuristic, rears its head throughout 'Orion's chattering drums, whilst 'Allegro Energico' becomes the soundtrack to this fictional sci-fi, employing stabbing violins to build tension. With classical influences and a huge dollop of prog-rock pretension, this is Techno Jim, but not as we know it. [Liam Arnold]
