Single title: Flight of the Finch
Artist: Dan Sartain
Label: One Little Indian
Flight of the Finch' is smooth and catchy lounge rockabilly, lead by a crisp, desolate guitar line: the vocals swoon while a mariachi brass band lurches around in this slightly confused and charming love song. Evoking late fifties kitsch and cinematic orchestration, Sartain manages to pastiche melodramatic balladry without crass parody, sounding simultaneously knowing and involved. Even if the lyrics fail to explain how his desire is like the flight of "the weakest of the birds", this is a well-crafted number with a sweet hook. [Margaret Kirk]
