the early development of a band that was borne out of frustration

The re-issue of angry-geek opus 'Sebadoh III' is essential for fans and should prove an intriguing, if challenging introduction to those who are trying Barlow & co. for the first time. Kicking off with the happy, infectious final fuck-you to J Mascis that is Freed Pig, this personal vendetta segues into faithful tribute on a cover of the Minutemen's Sickles and Hammers. 31 tracks chart the early development of a band that was borne out of frustration, with post-hardcore and folk influences playing a bizarre tug of war. At times almost excruciatingly lo-fi, the arrangements challenge anyone to follow the strained slightly-too-high vocals and only offer the occasional olive branch of chirpy hooks amid the distortion. With some rare and fascinating glimpses into the past available on the second disc, this is a release worth spending time on. More proof, if any were needed, that nerds with an axe to grind produce the finest tunes. [Caroline Hurley]
