Washerman – Raw Poet

Album Review by Bram E. Gieben | 19 Sep 2013
Album title: Raw Poet
Artist: Washerman
Label: Drumpoet Community
Release date: 23 Sep

With the continuing trend of retro-futurist synth music driving the cult of the gear-head further than it has been driven in years towards mainstream recognition, and with the analogue synth at the core of so many up-and-coming bands, from young indie pretenders to genuine synth-pop breakout stars such as CHVRCHES, the use of analogue gear has become a point of pride for some electronic musicians.

Washerman's publicity proudly declares that Raw Poet was made solely with a Juno 60 and a 909. Unfortunately, what he has chosen to make with his top-end kit is fairly boring and unadventurous progressive and deep house, which would no doubt blend seamlessly into many DJ sets, but leaves little trace in the memory or affections. True, the extended melodic patterns have a looser, more limbic feel than rigid, disposable Pro Tools material, but unfortunately, this fails to elevate it above the formulaic. An uninspiring dose of nostalgia. [Bram E. Gieben]
