The opening of V&A Dundee is only a few months away, and the new venue looks to kick off in grand style with the 3D Festival, a two-day celebration of design, music and performance that will mark the opening of the mint fresh building created by acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, which will act as Scotland’s first design museum.

Announced this morning is that legendary Scottish outfit Primal Scream will headline this free two-day event, with the band also unveiling a new work with contemporary visual artist and Turner Prize nominee Jim Lambie. Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie, said: “We’re looking forward to performing at the V&A Dundee opening and collaborating with our dear friend Jim Lambie again.”

Gillespie and co will be joined on the bill by a couple of rising stars of the Scottish scene: Bathgate singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi and Dundee’s very own Be Charlotte. All three will perform at the 3D Festival on Friday 14 September, on the eve of the museum’s official opening.

The 3D festival continues on opening day, with events and performances celebrating the great creative talent from across Dundee. The Saturday concert will feature sets from up-and-coming Dundee musicians ST.MARTiiNS, Kashmir Crows, SHHE and Andrew Wasylyk as well as another main stage set from Be Charlotte. Other highlights are a live painting and graffiti workshop with Open/Close Dundee and a special limited-edition comic from Dundee's Beano Studios for everyone attending the 3D Festival, which will give people the opportunity to draw their own comic book ending, with a winning design selected to be immortalised inside V&A Dundee.

The event is part of Scotland’s Year of Young People and has been co-designed by V&A Dundee’s Young People’s Collective, a group of 16 to 25-year-olds from across the city. They’ve been involved with everything from helping shape the two-day festival to choosing who will perform.

“Friday evening will involve lots of great music and dance,” says Kiera Marshall, a member of V&A Dundee's Young People's Collective, “and Saturday will be relaxed and family focused with performances, street food and design workshops. We really want the festival to be open to everyone of all ages.

“It’s been great having meetings and planning the 3D Festival and now it’s exciting to see it all come together.”

Tickets to Friday night’s gig are available through a free online ballot – sign up at V&A Dundee’s website. The Saturday event is free and not ticketed.
