Tree Trunks are Robert Hunter, Sam Lewis and Rozi Leyden. They met as musicians in part of a wider scene of lo-fi pop bands, playing in some or all of the following: Rozi Plain, Fránçois & The Atlas Mountains and Babe. Two years ago Hunter and Lewis came together to try their hand at electronic music, inspired by the likes of Prince and Arthur Russell as well as Jessy Lanza, Jai Paul and Hot Chip. They brought Leyden on board to help with vocals and lyrics, tying the project together, and Tree Trunks was born.
Tree Trunks explore the line where 80s pop meets modern electronica; a world of dark dancefloors and ethereal romance, where relationships fall apart and reform, and one song can turn everything around. Tree Trunks release their debut Big Rush EP on 12 May via Heka Trax – it was recorded and mixed in various bedrooms across London, and Nico Marcel (Electrelane) was brought in to help master the songs. On remix duty for the EP are rising Scottish house producer Big Miz (DABJ) and Heka Trax boss Nightwave who provides a celestial, jungle-inspired version.
The Skinny are delighted to be premiering the video for You Say taken from the EP. The video was filmed in Amsterdam, directed by Sophie Wright and stars Rachel Sato-Bank. Lewis tells us more about the track: “With my lyrics I try to be impressionistic, I want people to be able to interpret the songs in their own way. But there are little glimpses of meanings and feelings – a couple trying to connect who can't, the feeling of not wanting to get what you want if it means doing it alone.
“Sophie Wright's video perfectly captured the excitement and isolation of wandering European cities in a new digital world. When I listen to the track now I can hear the contemporary pop we were listening to when we wrote it; Chaz Bundick, Caribou, Ryan Hemsworth, maybe even a bit of PC Music. I wanted it to have a little of the mystery of an Arthur Russell track too.”
