CHUMP – Lose Your Life (Track Premiere)

Feature by Music Team | 29 Mar 2017

Beginning life as the sleepy-headed bedroom project of singer and guitarist Tara Masterson Hally, CHUMP are a sulk-core three-piece from Glasgow. Having already shared bills with Chastity Belt, PAWS and Diet Cig, the trio’s line-up is completed by drummer Matt Robin and bassist Tony Kelly.

At the end of 2015 CHUMP recorded their debut EP, Treat Me Mean, recorded at Glasgow’s Green Door Studio which they self-released on cassette on April Fool’s day last year as a non-prank.

Returning to the same studio, CHUMP recently recorded their At Least We Got A Song Out Of It 7'', set for release on 31 Mar via Edinburgh label Gerry Loves Records. The Skinny are delighted to be premiering the B-side to the single, Lose Your Life, ahead of its general release.

Of the song, Masterson Hally told The Skinny: "Lose Your Life started out as an instrumental that we used to call the lullaby song, until one practice when our bassist Tony came with a sort of soliloquy he’d written, now we lovingly refer to it as Tony’s Theme.

"The title Lose Your Life is sort of a misnomer because the lyrics largely deal with Tony offering advice on how not to. One line in the song is actually taken from a text conversation we had when I was feeling down," she continues. "Every time we play this song I joke/warn everyone that they're going to fall in love with Tony, but it still makes me swoon to hear his calm counsel on this track.

"It feels like a nice counterpart as a B-side because in so many ways At Least We Got A Song Out Of It is about trying to comfort yourself about something unpleasant happening to you and Lose Your Life is about the comfort and support you can receive when you ask a friend for help."

Bassist (and vocalist on this track) Kelly adds: “Lose Your Life is a pep talk in the form of a lullaby. It’s encouragement against getting caught up in those things that give you instant gratification but ultimately leave you feeling worse.”

At Least We Got A Song Out Of It is released on 31 Mar via Gerry Loves Records. CHUMP celebrate the release with two launch shows: The Safari Lounge, Edinburgh, 30 Mar and The Old Hairdresser's, Glasgow, 31 Mar.
