Katie Buchan is set to release her self-titled sophomore album this October under her Best Girl Athlete moniker. Best Girl Athlete was written by Katie along with her father, Charley Buchan, prior to Katie turning 18. She’s an incredibly talented songwriter and we’re delighted to be premiering Baby Come Home, taken from the new record. Listen to the track in the player below.

Of the track, Katie tells us: “Baby Come Home was written pretty late in the making of the new album. The song started off as a simple, Spanish-sounding tribute to [Italian composer] Ludovico Einaudi, whom we both love. I heard my dad playing around with these chords and I’d said how much I liked it, and I started writing lyrics. It turns out my dad had also been writing words but while my ideas centred around the joy of a new relationship, Dad had written pretty dark stuff about desperation and loss!

“Somehow we managed to work in parts of one another’s lyrics to produce what you hear now. Around this time I had been part of a Celtic Connections show – Old Roots, New Shoots – bringing together north-east Scotland musicians to perform on one another’s music but with a traditional Scottish band as the core. There was a rapper called Jackill (Jack Hughes) who blew everyone away with his improvisation and rhyming, and we couldn’t quite believe that it somehow worked with traditional folk music.

“We remembered Jack and thought it would be fantastic to throw a bit of a curveball into the track from what we usually do and invited him to contribute. Collaborating and letting others bring their ideas to songs is an important part of the album. I think some people simply won’t get it, but I‘m so pleased we did work with Jack as he was able to tune in to the song making a really emotive and personal contribution about his girlfriend and baby who very nearly died due to birth complications. I think Jack is definitely one to watch for the future."

Best Girl Athlete is released on 2 Oct via Fitlike Records.
