Taupe – A Clown Drools: Video Premiere

Video by Music Team | 10 Feb 2017

Taupe, Newcastle’s resident chaotic punk-jazz maestros, release their second album Fill Up Your Lungs and Bellow on 24 Feb ahead of a UK tour playing dates in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and beyond.

The Tyneside trio – now split between Newcastle, Manchester and Edinburgh – comprises of Jamie Stockbridge, Mike Parr-Burman and Adam Stapleford, enlisted the wisdom of experimental music legend and all-round top guy Chris Sharkey (TrioVD, Shiver, Acoustic Ladyland) to produce the record, a follow-up to their 2014 self-titled debut.

Fill Up Your Lungs… refines Taupe's metrically explorative constructions and avant-bop melodies, and juxtaposes this with increasingly brave interactive improvisations and sonic explorations. In so doing, Taupe cite influences from South Indian Carnatic music, the pounding polyrhythms of Meshuggah, the math-bop grooving of Steve Coleman’s M-Base movement and DIY stompbox noise-wranglings.

A Clown Drools is the first track to be taken from the album – guitarist Parr-Burman tells us: “A Clown Drools opens our new album. It sounds more or less exactly like that fictional jazz-punk-wonk-ethio-improv-noise hit you've had rattling round your head for weeks.

"Working with Antonia Bañados on the video was a treat too.” Parr-Burman enthuses. “We’ve been keen to do something together since I collaborated with her last year – doing the sound for her video/installation New Lands – and her sci-fi tinged abstract montage really hits the spot."
