Oh Sees @ Academy, Manchester, 14 Jun

Live Review by Alastair Atcheson | 21 Jun 2017

Unbridled and explosive, Oh Sees arrive in Manchester with a streamlined name and a momentous sound. Ever restless, John Dwyer and co start early, catching the audience unawares with screeching opener Plastic Plant from last year’s A Weird Exits. With its rapidly-climbing string bends and thunderous rhythm, the track sets the tone for the night – a barrage of fuzzed-out garage rock that seizes hold and refuses to let go.

Like any good band with two drummers, Oh Sees have them front and centre, and the synchronised abuse of these two drum kits is nothing short of mesmerising. Stomping grooves and complex fills are played with a kind of precise aggression that’s difficult to turn away from, even as Dwyer shreds, spits and screams only feet away.

On Gelatinous Cube, Dwyer performs full body stretches and wrangles an impressive amount of feedback out of his chin-high guitar before jamming his vocal mic down his throat and howling. Spectacle aside, these acts of sonic violence create a thrilling soundscape that is underpinned by some serious musicianship; between breakneck riffs and rapid chord progressions he effortlessly throws in off-kilter blues licks and shimmering harmonics that add melodic clarity and direction to the propulsive rhythm section.

New songs tonight include The Static God, the lead single from this year’s upcoming album Orc. A masterclass in dynamics, the frantic guitar and crashing cymbals give way to a stuttering beat that Dwyer builds on, moving back and forth between guitar and synths until the whole thing detonates in a wall of sound and strobe lights.

And if two drummers wasn’t enough, Oh Sees bring out Mike Shoun – their former drummer, and current member of the evening's support art The Peacers – for an extended rendition of Contraption/Soul Desert to close the show. Sprawling and psychedelic, Oh Sees close out the night at the Academy with a mighty punch that none of us will be forgetting any time soon.
