Model Aeroplanes find themselves somewhat upstaged by the supporting Fauves at King Tut's Summer Nights in Glasgow

Live Review by Claire Francis | 08 Aug 2017

The penultimate show of this year’s King Tut’s Summer Nights showcase is thick on indie-pop. Opened by upcoming Edinburgh outfit Vistas, Fauves then impress a sizeable audience with their jingly-jangly brand of art-pop. The four-piece’s playfully saccharine melodies are made palatable via the offset of Ryan Caldwell’s raw vocal delivery. They save their best – Hit Like This – till last, and even if upbeat indie music isn’t your jam, you’d be hard pressed not to enjoy this set.

Does it go against the community spirit of the Summer Nights shows to say that headliners Model Aeroplanes don’t reach the heights of their support act? Since forming in January 2013, the Dundee four-piece have released a string of pop-leaning singles that have seen them win a string of high-profile support shows and festival slots. They look the part – think long hair, dungarees and checked shirts – and the stage banter wins them a few laughs (“we’re from the tropical paradise down the road,” they quip).

Their set is also slick, with jams like Wide Open reminiscent of the kind of thing Foals have been doing for years, and Better With You combining danceable beats and some decent riff work. It’s a technically proficient show, and the crowd is in a lather. But in an oversaturated indie-pop market, the afterglow feels somewhat hollow.
