Live music in Edinburgh

My Vitriol @ Summerhall, 8 Nov
London-based My Vitriol 2001's debut studio album, Finelines, is credited as leading the way in 'nu gaze'. After a 15-year-gap, last year saw them release their second studio album, The Secret Sessions, off the back of a successful PledgeMusic campaign. Just over a year on from its release and MV are on the road, stopping in at Summerhall tonight to give Edinburgh ears a pelting. Support was originally mean to come from ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, but sadly they're unable to make the tour now. Stepping in tonight is Edinburgh band Volka.

Rachel Alice Johnson @ Sneaky Pete's, 8 Nov
Launching her final single release of the year – Coming Down Slow – at Sneaky Pete's tonight is Edinburgh-based Rachel Alice Johnson. Support comes from electronic duo Chuchoter, and Glasgow-based singer-songwriter Deni Smith.

Harry Harris @ Leith Depot, 9 Nov
On the same night that Leith Depot will be celebrating their second birthday (long live Leith Depot), Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Harry Harris is celebrating the release of his Andre the Giant EP. Anybody want a peanut?

Bossy Love @ The National Museum of Scotland, 10 Nov
Museum Lates returns this November with a Jacobites-themed evening and live music from Glasgow purveyors of dance and R'n'B, Bossy Love.

Slow Blood @ Leith Depot, 11 Nov
One of Edinburgh's newest bands (they only just released their debut single at the end of September), Slow Blood may or may not have been Dead Boy Robotics in a past life... their current incarnation is definitely worth checking out. Support tonight comes from The Line, and Fire in the Alps.

Gig of the week

Sylvan Esso @ SWG3, Glasgow, 12 Nov
North Carolina-based Sylvan Esso are Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn, and they’re bloody great. It’s as simple as that really. If you need proof, just listen to their back catalogue – which includes bangers like H.S.K.T., Coffee, Just Dancing, and Radio – and if you’re not 100% in and dancing your butt off by the end, we’ll give you your money back (not really though). In all honesty, they’ve two excellently bleepy pop records under their belt, and they don’t play over here very often so you should check them out live while you can. Go on, treat yourself!

Live music in Glasgow

Lilura w/ Josephine Sillars @ Hug & Pint, 7 Nov
LILURA – real name Jemma Tweedie – hails from the small seaside town of Nairn just outside of Inverness, so it’ll come as quite the surprise when you hear the dark electro-pop music she’s creating. Set to release her brand new single Darkest Desire this month, it was co-written by Dan Richards who’s best known for his work with One Direction. Needless to say, LILURA is one to watch. Support comes from fellow Highlander, Josephine Sillars & The Manic Pixie Dreams.

Kagoule @ Broadcast, 7 Nov
Nottingham post-punks Kagoule bring their crunchy yet melodic sound to Broadcast as part of their UK tour. Support comes from Glasgow glam four-piece Catholic Action, whose debut album In Memory Of dropped last month.

Shabazz Palaces @ The Art School, 8 Nov
Back in July we caught up with Ishmael Butler, one half of Seattle-based hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces, who told us about the Palaceer of Shabazz Palaces' encounter with the sentient being Quazarz and how it came to influence their latest pair of albums, Quazarz: Born on a Ganster Star and Quazarz vs the Jealous MachineCatch them live tonight for what will surely be a colourful and exciting show at The Art School.

Julien Baker @ CCA, 8 Nov
At the end of October Memphis, TN singer-songwriter Julien Baker released Turn Out the Lights, the follow-up to her 2015 debut Sprained Ankle. Baker's voice is utterly beguilling and if you're in desperate need of some soothing tones, then get yourself along to the CCA tonight. Your ears will thank you.

Shredd @ Nice 'n' Sleazy, 10 Nov
Glasgow-based three-piece, and winner of Best Newcomer in the 2017 Scottish Alternative Music Awards, Shredd release their latest single – Flight of Stairs – today. Celebrate with them tonight at Sleazy's for their single launch show. Get down early for some class support from American Clay and The Kidney Flowers. Get your face-melt on!

Wolf Alice @ Barrowlands, 11 & 12 Nov
London four-piece Wolf Alice released their massive second studio album, Visions of a Life, at the end of September. With an extensive touring schedule in place taking them well in to 2018, this could be your last chance to catch them in Scotland for some time.

PINS @ Stereo, 12 Nov
Manchester five-piece PINS are back in Glasgow tonight for one of their last Scottish dates of the year. Not heard their Bad Thing EP featuring the one and only Iggy Pop? Get that rectified pronto, then grab a ticket to this gig and go check them out live!

Andrew Hung @ The Hug & Pint, 13 Nov
One half of Fuck Buttons, Andrew Hung released his debut solo record – Realisationship – at the start of October and is touring it this November, stopping off at Glasgow's Hug & Pint tonight. Check out Hung's Under the Influence feature he wrote for us here.
