Live music in Edinburgh

Malka @ Sneaky Pete's, 1 Nov
Scottish experimental alt-pop singer-songwriter MALKA celebrates the release of her new album Ratatatat with a launch show at Sneaky's – watch the video for Falling for a taste of MALKA's sound. MALKA also plays the Hug & Pint on 2 Nov.

Father John Misty @ Usher Hall, 1 Nov
Former Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman has transformed himself in recent years, fully growing into his new persona as the messianic wind-up merchant known as Father John Misty. Expect him to bring his exceptional stagecraft to the Usher Hall in support of Pure Comedy, his deep, dark and farcical look at 21st-century culture which earned a five-star review from us earlier this year. You can also catch Misty at the O2 Academy in Glasgow on 2 Nov.

Japanese Breakfast @ The Mash House, 4 Nov
Michelle Zauner's second album as Japanese Breakfast – Soft Sounds From Another Planet – takes influences from the worlds of sci-fi and space exploration, but it's still firmly grounded in her excellent brand of guitar-pop. Support comes from dreampop five-piece Night Flowers and ambient duo Super Inuit.

LILURA @ Sneaky Pete’s, 5 Nov
LILURA – real name Jemma Tweedie – hails from the small seaside town of Nairn just outside of Inverness, so it’ll come as quite the surprise when you hear the dark electro-pop music she’s creating. Set to release her brand new single Darkest Desire this month, it was co-written by Dan Richards who’s best known for his work with One Direction. Needless to say, LILURA is one to watch. Support comes from fellow Highlander, Josephine Sillars & The Manic Pixie Dreams. You can also catch them at The Hug & Pint, Glasgow, 7 Nov.

Kagoule @ Sneaky Pete's, 6 Nov
Nottingham post-punks Kagoule bring their crunchy yet melodic sound to Sneaky's as part of their UK tour. Support comes from Glasgow glam four-piece Catholic Action, whose debut album In Memory Of dropped last month; the tour also hits Broadcast through in Glasgow on 7 Nov.

Perfume Genius @ The Art School, Glasgow, 2 Nov
The last time Mike Hadreas – aka Perfume Genius – graced us with his undeniably beautiful presence, it was in support of The xx at the SWG3 Galvanizer’s Yard at the end of August. Now he’s back and headlining his own show at The Art School. Expect hips that won’t quit, gorgeously heartfelt vocals and soundscapes that will make even the tiniest hairs on your arms stand on end. Support tonight comes from the stunning Julianna Barwick.

Live music in Glasgow

Liars @ Broadcast, 1 Nov
Angus Andrew has gone solo as Liars, and earlier this year described new album TFCF – recorded in a remote area of his native Australia – as a break-up record to his former bandmates. Andrew brings his new sound to Broadcast tonight; get down early to catch a support slot from Glasgow's premier synthpop duo Happy Meals.

Little Dragon @ St Luke's, 1 Nov
The Gothenburg quartet have been working together for two decades, and have collaborated with everyone from De La Soul and DJ Shadow to Gorillaz. The result is an impressive chemistry between Yukimi Nagano, Erik Boden, Fredrik Källgren Wallin and Håkan Wirenstrand, which should be on display in the lovely surroundings of St Luke's.

Com Truise @ Stereo, 2 Nov
Seth Haley's first new material in six years arrived this summer with the latest Com Truise album Iteration, and it's been worth the wait. The new album is packed with 80s-inspired synth lines, danceable beats and vaporwave stylings, so we're intrigued to see how it translates to the live setting. Luckily, we don't have long to wait...

The Fall @ QMU, 4 Nov
While recent shots of Fall frontman Mark E. Smith performing from a wheelchair have prompted concern from across the scene, it seems the show will go on for the latest iteration of Smith's post-punk cavalcade. Expect things to be as noisy and unpredictable as ever when The Fall hit the QMU this week.

Her's @ The Hug & Pint, 4 Nov
A pair of graduates from Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts ("People like to pigeonhole bands from here but we had a good time and we met Paul McCartney so I'm not embarrassed"), Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading's sound blends jangle-pop and indie elements with the quiet reliability of a drum machine. Catch the duo tonight at The Hug & Pint.

Julia Jacklin @ Òran Mór, 6 Nov
Sydney songwriter Julia Jacklin's debut album Don't Let The Kids Win was a highlight of 2016, and the snippets of material she's shared this year show that her atmospheric indie is only going from strength to strength. Catch her at Òran Mór this weekend, with support from Atlanta folk singer Faye Webster.

Big Thief @ CCA, 6 Nov
Adrianne Lenker and Big Thief return to Glasgow on the heels of their support slot on Conor Oberst's recent stop at the ABC. This time round they're in the intimate environs of the CCA; expect an extended selection of tracks from latest LP Capacity.
