Live music in Edinburgh

The Japanese House @ The Liquid Room, 10 May
Amber Bain brings her "Imogen Heap-esque harmonies, dreamy undertones and alluring synth sounds" to Edinburgh for a headline show.

Ducktails / James Ferraro @ Summerhall, 10 May
Edinburgh promoters’ Braw Gigs and Nothing Ever Happens Here have teamed up again and are treating us to an excellent hump-day line-up this month. Featuring Ducktails, the moniker of Matthew Mondanile, previously of Real Estate fame, and electronic producer James Ferraro. Support comes from experimental noise-maker Spencer Clark, aka Typhonian Highlife. Can't make Edinburgh? Catch the whole lot at Glasgow's Broadcast on 9 May.

Pronto Mama @ Mash House, 12 May
With the Paisley six-piece's debut album dropping at the weekend courtesy of venerable student-run label Electric Honey, now is a good time to get on the Pronto Mama hype train. Join them at the Mash House for a run through of tracks from the "eclectic and soulful" Any Joy LP.

C Duncan @ The Caves, 14 May
A slice of beautifully-composed dreampop to finish the week, as C Duncan returns to the capital with tracks from last year's Midnight Sun LP; support comes from Glasgow chamber pop outfit Modern Studies.

Gig of the Week

Gallops @ Hug & Pint, 10 May
Do your brain a favour tonight and snatch a ticket for Wrexham instrumentalists Gallops, back with new LP, Bronze MysticTheir sound's akin to a cerebral deep tissue massage; relentless thumps, swerving synth and completely OTT percussion. Get a glimpse of what's in store with this live recording of Bronze Mystic cut Darkjewel, recorded at a recent show at Telford’s Warehouse in Chester.

Gigs in Glasgow

Maximo Park @ O2 ABC, 9 May
Fresh from the release of their sixth album Risk to Exist, catch Paul Smith and co under the ABC's giant disco ball. Support comes from Manchester girl gang and fierce, dynamic live act PINS.

Lush Purr @ The Old Hairdresser's, 9 May
You may recognise members of this Glasgow-based outfit from former bands such as The Yawns, Mirror Parties and Copy Haho. Drawn from places near and far to Glasgow for its vibrant music scene, the four-piece recently signed to Song, by Toad and have re-released their Cuckoo Waltz album on vinyl this month. Read our four-star review of the record here.

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic @ O2 ABC, 10 May
They've got a real type of thing going down, gettin' down; there's a whole lot of rhythm going round. George Clinton brings the legendary funk pioneers back to Glasgow – dancing shoes heavily advised.

Hey Colossus @ Nice N Sleazy, 12 May
The psych rock forerunners make their first stop in Glasgow for around a decade (by the band's own estimates). Expect molten metal, frenzied feedback and motorik grooves from the London six-piece.

Colonel Mustard & the Dijon Five @ O2 Academy, 13 May
The Yellow Movement heads to one of its biggest stages yet, with Colonel Mustard and co headlining the Academy this weekend. One of Scotland's most arresting live acts, we're intrigued to see what they pull out for this one – read our chat with the Colonel from this month's magazine to get an idea of what's in store.
