Live Music in Edinburgh

47 Soul @ Studio 24, Fri 24 Feb

47SOUL is an electro Arabic dabke band who formed in Amman, Jordan in 2013. They’ve created their own sound, and although reminiscent of dabke King Omar Souleyman, it’s still very much their own, self-dubbed as ‘shamstep’. Thanks to Knockengorroch World Ceilidh festival, 47SOUL play their first ever show in the capital this month alongside favourites Samedia Shebeen, trad band Awry and the Beltane Beastie Drummers.

Happy Meals w/ Wuh Oh & Cracked Hands @ Teviot Underground, Fri 24 Feb

The fluid synth-pop of SAY Award nominees Happy Meals makes a welcome return to the capital this weekend, conjuring a whole host of lovely sounds from an impressive array of hardware. Support from much-lauded Glasgow sample-master Wuh Oh, and electronic newcomer Cracked Hands (with live visuals from Saint Lauren).

Song, By Toad's Granfalloon @ Summerhall, Sat 25 Feb

The much-loved Edinburgh label stages an all-day takeover of Summerhall to celebrate the launch of Meursault's new album I Will Kill Again. Also on the bill are Rocky Lorelei, Lush Purr, Adam Stafford, Faith Eliott & Now Wakes The Sea – best keep the whole of Saturday free for this one.

Undo @ Henry's Cellar Bar, Sat 25 Feb

Glasgow four-piece Undo combine post-punk influenced drums, intelligent basslines and hook-laden, destructive guitars with introspective, multi-layered, thoughtful lyrics. Last August they released a split 7" with Jutland Songs, and on Friday they self-release their self-titled debut album, so are touring to celebrate the occasion. Hurrah! They premiered the video for Paint Me on these pages last week – check it out in the player below.

Live Music in Glasgow

Bugzy Malone w/ Shogun, Ransom FA & more @ Sub Club, Thu 23 Feb

Manchester’s Bugzy Malone has been hailed as one of the key grime MCs instigating a revival in the genre. Joining him at Sub Club will be a few heavyweights of the Scottish grime scene: Polonis, Chrissy Grimes, FA Ransom and our November cover star, the mighty Shogun. All of this on one night; you have the J-Bone Collective to thank for that, who celebrate one year of events that very same night.

Pinegrove @ Stereo, Fri 24 Feb

Following their impressive set at the Hug & Pint last August, the New Jersey emo aces return to Glasgow. This time they're at the more spacious environs of Stereo, with the buzz for their debut LP Cardinal only growing since its release last year. Expect big choruses, intricate guitar lines and lots of loud-to-quiet dynamic shifts. Tickets are currently sold out, so you may need to scout around a bit; alternatively, join Undo at their album launch show over at the Hug & Pint, or catch Croy post-rock outfit Campfires in Winter who celebrate their album launch across at the Old Hairdressers.

Julia Jacklin @ King Tut's, Mon 27 Feb

The Sydney songwriter saw her debut Don't Let The Kids Win embraced wholeheartedly – it made our albums of 2016 list, and with good reason – and now Jacklin returns to the UK for a string of dates including this one at King Tut's. We caught up with Jacklin to discuss the reaction to the album, and the story behind its creation – read the interview here.

Gig of the Week

Lady Leshurr @ O2 ABC 2, Sun 26 Feb

An ultra bad ass rapper who quotes Adele and raps insults like “your lips looks like crispy bacon” in her tracks, Lady Leshurr is one of grime's leading lights. Catch her in the intimate confines of the small room at the ABC this weekend – study up on her Queen's Speech series to get sufficiently hyped.
