Synths, slacker-pop and top-drawer emo all feature in this week's Edinburgh and Glasgow gig guide

Live music in Glasgow

Modern Baseball @ SWG3, 16 Feb

Lynchpins in the recent emo revival, the Philadelphia crew return to Scotland hot on the heels of last year's Holy Ghost album. Guitarist Brendan Lukens won't be making the trip, but touring buddies Thin Lips and The Superweaks will be helping out, 'cause that's what friends are for.

Band of Horses @ O2 Academy, 16 Feb

Ben Bridwell and his band of merry men return to Glasgow with songs from their 2016 album Why Are You OK, produced by Grandaddy's Jason Lytle.

Tegan & Sara @ O2 ABC, 17 Feb

The identical Quins are back – T&S returned from a three-year hiatus last May with new album Love You to Death, with a new pop focus moving their style on even further from their 90s origins.

Live Music in Edinburgh

Menace Beach @ Sneaky Pete's, 15 Feb

The Leeds quintet head north with tunes from their new album Lemon Memory – as our Joseph Viney put it, "when they strike gold, they hit it hard", so head down ready for some grunge-pop goodness.

Be Charlotte @ Electric Circus, 18 Feb

With the kind of musical résumé that could induce uncomfortable levels of inferiority among her much older peers, Be Charlotte's rise through the Scottish music ranks has been impressive. Catch her at EC for "an electric, eclectic three-member orchestra of thudding percussive beats, keyboard, and pedal loops" – she also plays at the Garage in Glasgow the day before, with support from Ali Robertson, who premiered his new video Couldn't Want You More with us earlier this week.

Pick of the Week

S U R V I V E @ The Art School, 20 Feb

You may know them from their much-acclaimed soundtrack to Netflix's kids-versus-aliens chiller Stranger Things, but S U R V I V E's synth compositions more than stand up on their own. With their new album out now on vaunted metal label Relapse, expect 70s and 80s electronica with nods to psych and krautrock. We caught up with the band for our February issue to talk touring, band roles and the motivational powers of Brian Eno – read our interview here.
