There’s you, bitching and whining about being stone-cold broke after the festive splurge – and here’s Soup Kitchen, pulling an ace with a free gig featuring some of our favourite rising names of the North, who are incidentally also three standouts from last September’s Stay Fresh Fest. To be precise: Leeds-based post-punk trio Cowtown, Chester indie-pop threesome Peaness and Manchester’s own Kyotoya. We’ll be there, and we expect to see you there, too. Soup Kitchen, 7pm, free

If you’re in the market for some weekend antics, Sheffield alt-pop outfit Bayonet will be down at The Deaf Institute with their classic indie riffs and catchy pop hooks. All yours for £8 – or a mere tenner if you loiter round for £2 entry to the 80s haven that is Girls on Film. The Deaf Institute, 7pm, £8

Meanwhile, over at Soup Kitchen they're offering up similarly priced potential with the LuCoo Live All Dayer, a day of sounds curated by Manchester-based promoter LuCoo. On the bill you'll find Man Made, Ethan and The Reformation, Hello Operator, Crimsons, KASHMERE, Carnival Club, La Mode and Kieran Dobson, along with DJ sets from Wet Dreams and Disco Illusions throughout. Soup Kitchen, £8-£10, 3pm

Ease the bitter sting of both the inclement January weather and this whole #Trump nonsense with a bit of poolside pop – with a bite – from London-based trio Dream Wife. Night & Day Café, 8pm, £7

Seems you lot are waaay hyped to hear that Run the Jewels have announced a UK and European tour, hitting our stages this April to accompany the recent release of their third album – which, in case you needed persuading, we awarded the full five stars, thanks to Killer Mike and El-P’s blending of "big-time bravado with some truly eye-opening takes on modern life".
