Still knocking it out of the park in terms of cleverclogs songwriting, not to mention a knack for subtly affecting undertones, former Beta Bandista Steve Mason returns to tour this year's Meet The Humans LP. Long-term fans will know exactly what to expect, but newbies might can cheerfully anticipate a lovely evening with an artist who truly gives a fuck, continuing as ever down his own idiosyncratic path.
Arts Club, 7pm, £18

Also hitting Liverpool tonight is Brooklyn resident Honeychild Coleman, founder of the Sistagrrl Riott Collective and artist in her own right. Drawing on a plethora of post-punk and dreampop influences, Coleman is sometimes ethereally beautiful, sometimes flush with serrated rhythms – but always completely arresting. She performs two sets at Maguire's (not bad for a Wednesday) while fellow NYC alumni DJ Criterion spins punk'n'stuff to round out the evening.
Maguire's Pizza Bar, 8pm, Free entry (PWYW donations)

Tonight's highlight for fans of more explorative sounds comes courtesy of the good folks at Deep Hedonia. As a rare treat, they bring seminal UK performer Mike Cooper to the Bluecoat. Having begun his career as a folk-blues guitarist in 1962, Cooper began incorporating field recordings into his studio work in the late 60s – dubbing his latest evolution 'ambient electronic exotica', the 74-year-old's appearance is most assuredly not to be missed.
Bluecoat Gallery, 7pm, £10 OTD

Described as "a darker Maccabees" and praised for the quality of their songwriting, local boys Cavalry released their latest single Everything via the Fierce Panda stable in April this year, and since then they've kept themselves busy amassing their steadily-growing army of new fans. Support comes from Melbourne shoegazers Flyying Colours and masterful popsmiths Bathymetry.
Buyers Club, 7.30pm, £6

With the glorious sounds of latest LP The Wilderness still ringing in our ears (read our five-star review here), we turn our heads excitedly towards Explosions In The Sky's visit to Merseyside. Still among the most beloved of post-rockers, the Texan quartet continue their slow shift move into ever-more expansive territories – a career-best album that promises to send live audiences into the stratosphere.
Philharmonic Hall, 7.30pm, £22

On the same night, you can catch Ann Arborite shoegazers Pity Sex over at Studio 2. Still dripping with praise following the underground success of last year's White Hot Moon LP, the band recently played their final show with the honeyed vocals of Britty Drake front and centre. It remains to be seen as to how the band will replace those sweetly emotive tones, but their heart-ensnaring melodicism should be enough to ensure the day is saved.
Studio 2, 7pm, £10

There's also an appearance from Dublin's All Tvvins, for anyone in the mood for some shimmering post-punk with blistering hooks and explosive choruses. Formed from the ashes of math-rock types Adebisi Shank and The Cast of Cheers, there are hints of Bloc Party's hearty rumble peppering their melodic attack, with flecks of Foals dotted hither and thither to boot: an impressive racket indeed.

11 Oct

Now embarking on an unexpected second reunion, London-based girl group All Saints unveiled their fourth album Red Flag earlier this year, trailed by the single One Strike. Worlds away from the William Orbit-produced fare of their turn-of-the-century peak, it's a decidedly softer sound for a band who rarely ventured too far into the frenetic in the first place. Still, they'll probably play Pure Shores, and that'll be ace.
O2 Academy, 7pm, £30.93

Now booking:

A fast-rising name in their native Manchester and beyond, wilfully crude pop yelpers Cabbage released their Uber Capitalist Death Trade EP via Skeleton Key Records, and now they're coming to Liverpool! Catch 'em alongside Liverpool faves Psycho Comedy and FUSS at The Magnet on 4 Nov, and pick up tickets here.
