Music premiere: Deathcats & New Swears split EP

Feature by News Team | 24 Nov 2014

Listen to an exclusive stream of the new split EP from Glasgow surf rock trio Deathcats and Ottawa four-piece New Swears, ahead of Deathcats' swansong gig next month.

Deathcats’ “bigger, darker” new material featured on the split is set to be their last, with the band going on hiatus as of next year. The lo-fi Glasgow trio have enjoyed an action-packed 2014, following the release of debut LP All Hail Deathcats in June and appearances at this summer’s T in the Park, and a "swaggering" set at the 2014 Wickerman festival

Describing the new material, guitarist James McGarragle says: “I'd say this EP is definitely bigger sounding than the album, the songs are maybe a wee bit darker too. None of them are named after TV characters or mention dogs, although one is named after poppers so we still aren't taking ourselves too seriously.”

On the band’s hiatus, brought about by the guitarist heading abroad and drummer Christopher Harvey returning to university, James says: “I'm sure that if there comes a time when we're all back in Glasgow and have time, we'll start playing again. The Reverb Militia is for life. Lubo till Death.”

Ottawa quarter New Swears provide four tracks to the split, following a European tour in support of their second album Junkfood Forever, Bedtime Whatever.

The Deathcats/ New Swears split EP is out on cassette and download on 5 Dec, via Fuzzkill Records – listen to it below. Deathcats launch the EP with a farewell gig at Stereo in Glasgow on 5 Dec.
