Thom Yorke releases surprise new album via BitTorrent

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has caught the music world off-guard – yet again – by releasing brand-new solo album Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes this afternoon via the internet file-sharing system BitTorrent.

In an announcement on Radiohead’s website, Yorke describes the move as an “experiment” in self-publishing. Of course, it isn't the first time Yorke has 'experimented' with online distribution – Radiohead infamously released the In Rainbows LP on a pay-what-you like basis in 2007.

Writing on the band’s website, Yorke says: “If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work.

"Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves. Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers. If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.”

Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes is Yorke’s second album under his own name, following the release of solo debut The Eraser in 2006. Watch the video for lead single A Brain in a Bottle in the player below.
