Since the inaugural year of its Scottish incarnation in 2013, the Tectonics Festival (9-11 May) sees the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra collaborating with a host of experimental music pioneers. The 2014 lineup features some internationally acclaimed artists, including Sonic Youth and Chelsea Light Moving guitarist Thurston Moore, and the perennial rebel of the Scottish jazz scene, Bill Wells.

Also appearing this year will be Christian Wolff and Takehisa Kosugi, performing alongside Moore; contemporary vocal ensemble EXAUDI, Icelandic composer collective S.L.Á.T.U.R., and Dylan Nyoukis performing with Scottish band cindytalk.

It all begins on 9 May with the opening concert, which features Wells, Klaus Lang, Jer Reid and Solène Weinachter, David Berhman, Catherine Lamb, Marcus Weiss, Aby Vulliamy, Christian Wolff, Richard Youngs, Vernon and Burns, Conqueing Animal Sound front-woman Anneka Kampman performing as ANAKANAK, Thurston Moore, Takehisa Kosugi and members of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Speaking exclusively to The Skinny, Alasdair Campbell, co-curator of this year's festival, comments: "I'm really looking forward to hearing Richard Young's new piece on Sunday. Also hearing the BBC Ensemble performing Bill Wells' Summer Dream on Friday evening. Also particularly looking forward to hearing the choir performances of James Weeks' Radical Road in the Foyer of City Halls, and as I am a big fan of poet John Ashbery's work I am looking forward to hearing Christian Wolff's Ashbery Madrigals... and of course cindytalk on Saturday night."

Campbell is also excited to hear the performance from Christian Wolff. "To have him performing his piano pieces on Friday night is really exciting for me," he comments, adding: "I am also looking forward to meeting the Icelandic ensemble S.L.Á.T.U.R. and what tricks they bring with them."

The rest of the programme features no less than 9 world premieres, including new work by Georg Friedrich HaasJohn OswaldDavid Behrman, and Klaus Lang, and revised works by Michael Finnissy, Richard Youngs and James Clapperton, a very special performance by Edinburgh group Usurper; and artist Sarah Kenchington's ‘mechanical instrument’ – a piece of sonic sculpture which will be installed in the City Halls Recital Room, and which can be played by members of the public throughout the weekend. EXAUDI's James Weeks will also perform a new work, peformed by two local amateur vocal ensembles.
