NOMAD'S TENT AUCTION FOR SYRIA: UPDATE
A while back, we told you about an auction and exhibition being held to benefit Syrian refugees, at Edinburgh antique and curios dealer the Nomad's Tent – read the full preview of the events here. Here is an update on how the exhibition has been going, and a look at some of the pieces collected for the big auction which will be the culmination of the month-long exhibition, with pieces kindly donated for auction by members of the public, and all proceeds going to charity.

Happy buyers at the Nomad's Tent fundraiser for Syria

The exhibition has been a huge success so far – the donated items have included an "extraordinary collection of oriental rugs, furniture, and recently awarded antiques," and have been exhibited at the Nomad's Tent since 7 March. This weekend, on Saturday 22 March at 11am, an auction will be hosted at the Nomad's Tent by Gavin Strang of Lyon and Turnbull Auctioneers, with fierce bidding expected on many of the items featured. Then from 23 March to 30 March, any remaining items will be sold at rock-bottom prices, with the organisers emphasising: "Everything must go!" Items expected to sell in the auction include a 19th century Turcoman carpet, a fine Kashmiri woman’s jacket, Turkish silver boxes, vintage jewellery and a complete dinner service.

100% of the revenue from sales will go to the Edinburgh branch of Mercy Corps, an organisation dedicated to helping those in conflict zones who lose their homes, their livelihoods and much more. Find out more details about the Nomad's Tent's mission to help the Mercy Corps on their website.

EXHIBITION: RACHEL LEVINE  AT 1 ROYAL TERRACE
Rachel Levine, the artist we chose for to receive The Skinny's award for new work at this year's RSA New Contemporaries, has a solo show happening this weekend at Glasgow gallery 1 Royal Terrace.

A previous installation by Rachel Levine

Running for just two more days (22 and 23 March), Levine's new installation is "exploring how power structures and ‘empirical’ versions of history affect our readings of objects, artifacts, architecture and the built environment." Her pimarily sculptural work "uses objects and materials as signifiers to create narrative environments." Find out more about the exhibition – called Here, Create Distance, Tension... Feel It Flex – can be found on the 1 Royal Terrace site. You'll be able to see more of her work in next month's Showcase.

EXHIBITION: THE STUDIOS #2 – DRAWING POSSIBILITIES
A major new exhibition taking place at Manchester's The Studios Gallery, one of the city's newest art venues, opened in 2013, will feature the work of Magda Archer, Lindsey Bull, Mike Chavez-Dawson, Jenny Core, Sophia Crilly, Carolyn Curtis Magri, Beatrice Haines, Stewart Kelly, Jim Medway, Klaus Pinter, Richard Shields and David Shrigley.

A piece by Jenny Core, one of the featured artists in The Studios #2: Drawing Possibilities

It runs from 22 May to 27 June. The exhibition focuses on these artists as prime examples of practitioners "who use drawing to observe, record and respond to the world around them." Full bios of each artist and more details about the exhibitions can be found at The Studios Gallery website.

EXHIBITION: THOMAS ANDERSON AT MARKET GALLERY
Another exhibition taking place in Glasgow this weekend that will only be open for one day is the new collection of installed video works from Edinburgh's Thomas Anderson. Miscellany: Revised Moments and Cinematic Artefacts uses props from the Titan Props store as a starting point for a journey into fictional realms referencing classic films, and using video, still imagery and editing techniques.

"Full stops, commas and certainly exclamations illustrate moments in our lives depicted by characters in films we do not know and have not seen," says the gallery's press release. "Through the accumulation and amalgamation of found image this collection of works stands as an attempt to express fleeting moments as something more comprehensible." The exhibition will run from 8pm on Saturday 22 March until 10pm, with a donations bar, at the Market Gallery in Glasgow's Kinning Park. Find out more at the Market Gallery's website.
