RBMA's new documentary featuring Brian Eno, James Murphy and others available to stream
Red Bull Music Academy have released their new documentary What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music online today. Directed by filmmaker Ralf Schmerberg for RBMA and Berlin production company Mindpirates, the video features in-depth interviews with a stunning array of musical legends, including Brian Eno, DFA's James Murphy, Giorgio Moroder, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Brainfeeder's Flying Lotus and Thundercat, dubstep originator Skream, Erykah Badu, composer Philip Glass, Nile Rodgers, techno don Richie Hawtin, Falty DL, legendary rappers Q-Tip and Rakim, and Blondie's Debbie Harry. The ambitious film looks into the reasons that musicians create; what they experience when they are making music; and what motivates them to keep going when times are tough.
"If you think about the things we love doing – sex, drugs, art, religion – they are all about a form of surrender," says Brian Eno in his section. Shot entirely at RBMA's New York symposium last year, the film draws on a series of interviews with the 62 featured artists, offering a rare insight into the minds and processes of some of the world's most respected creators.
You can stream the 90-minute film in full above. RBMA's 2014 Music Academy is open for applications from aspiring and established musicians until 18 March, with successful applicants going on to study at the Academy, which this year takes place in Tokyo. Find out more here.
