Sim City DS(Electronic Arts)

Sim City couldn't be more at home on the DS if it tried...

Game Review by Steve Adams | 09 Aug 2007
There are probably not many left in the gaming world unfamiliar with the Sim City games. First arriving in 1989, Sim City was a take on the popular "god sim" genre, allowing you to build your own city, taking care of your population and fixing any problems along the way. We've had another three sequels since then, even ending up in the distant future, but Sim City DS strips it right back to basics – build a city, and run it. Sim City couldn't be more at home on the DS if it tried. It's simple, addictive and while it's not the most taxing use of the hardware, you'll find yourself lost in it for hours. It's also really easy to pick up and play for ten minutes. Perfect. Use the touch screen to build your city, allocating areas for living or shopping/working, and scroll around - the top screen is the general display, so you look on as your city grows and takes shape. There are only two main flaws in the game. EA have introduced a news tracker, to give you some tips and advice, as well as general reporting from the city. Sadly the lag on it makes it unreadable, so while the game speeds on, the tracker is stuck on the forth word of the sentence. Secondly, it's a bit too easy. After struggling for a bit at the start, you'll find yourself making thousands of dollars very quickly. That's only a minor gripe though; it just means you can build new things quicker. We like it. We really do. Sim City DS just works on Nintendo's baby, and there's few other games available for the DS that you'll appreciate as much right now. [Steve Adams]
