Mortal Kombat: Unchained (Midway)

Extra characters, a solid main game and the ability to fight online make it merely a worthwile purchase

Game Review by JW | 10 Feb 2007
The latest in the seemingly never ending re-hash of this classic beat em' up comes to Sony's handheld - this is essentially MK: Armageddon with some graphical compromises for the PSP. Unchained features not only the core, stage by stage fighter, which has a couple of minor enhancements (breakable boundries, the ability to break combos and some other minimal guff), but four new PSP exlusive characters. Outside of the main game you also get Konquest Mode, Puzzle Kombat and Kombat Chess - all of which, in a swooping judgement, are dire. Konquest mode is similar to MK: Armageddon, and Deadly Alliance. Puzzle Kombat is an almost-addictive (it falls short and is just a mild distraction) tetris-esque game, featuring 'comedy' (I use the word loosely) midget versions of the game characters. Chess is, in a word, horrific. The most tactical game on the planet has been mauled horribly by the developers: some peices teleport, there are power ups, and even when you take a peice, you must fight to win... Why make this? Why? Horrible gimmicks aside, Unchained is solely a game for fanboys on the move. Extra characters, a solid main game and the ability to fight online make it merely a worthwile purchase for those with a bloodlust. [Josh Wilson]
