Garbage – Not Your Kind of People
Garbage have never been a band of much substance but at their peak they produced some brilliantly damaged pop music. Not Your Kind of People contents itself with refining an established musical palette but the frisson of their best work is in short supply. Whilst it would be unreasonable to expect Shirley Manson to resurrect her supervixen persona in 2012, it would have probably been more engaging than the stream of earnest platitudes that saturate the album.
Opener Automatic Systemic Habit sets the tone by seeing how much lyrical barrel-scraping it can get away with before veering recklessly into ‘80s Eurodance territory; the album’s title track is a pitifully cloying outsiders’ anthem and Beloved Freak... well, take a guess. Sonically it’s robust enough but Garbage never once deign to leave their comfort zone throughout the duration.

Add a comment »your opinion stopped having any credibility for me when you said that garbage has never been a band of substance. that is quite literally laughable because say what you will about their record, but substance is an area in which they've never been lacking. this is actually really funny.

Report to moderatorgarbage have said in multiple interviews they didnt want to reinvent themselves, and that they wanted to make a record for themselves. so what if they didnt leave their comfort zone? its garbage - not this gaga rubbish!!

Report to moderatorA great band like Garbage don't deserve such crap review. Shame on you Mark Shukla!

Report to moderatorHaving also heard the album, I have to disagree with a few things. It's certainly not the best album I've ever heard but there's some great wee songs on there. The Garbage affectionadoes will be pleased, but there is also quite a bit to enjoy for others. As already mentioned, the album was designed to emulate or recall a certain period, the band's first two efforts, and that is clear. Control - which I think is the best song on it - has a 90s guitar vibe and a similar kind of twist as the band's earlier b-sides. Big Bright World, though not one of my favourites, is V2.0 reminiscent. The band left their comfort zone for one distinctly underwhelming album (beautifulgarbage) and one so-so attempt (Bleed Like Me). This harks back to what they did well. You obviously didn't read the bio that came with the promo. Your issue is that this is no great departure. But that doesn't make it a bad album. It doesn't make it an amazing one either. But obviously just not to your internet.

Report to moderatorI think this review should contain a little more justification. It's STUPID to say that Garbage has never been a band of substance. But well, it is your opinion. I can't say anything 'cause i didn't listen to the album yet. But really shame on you, Garbage is one of the best bands ever.

Report to moderatorRight now I think 'The Skinny' have never been a place of much substance ^^ This review say nothing! "never been a band of much substance"..... maybe you were born yesterday,,,, not on the 90's !

Report to moderatorI bought Garbage the week it was released, I've had an abiding crush on Shirley since the video for Queer, and I wholeheartedly agree that they've never been a band of substance. They made thrilling, ephemeral indie pop and it was glorious, but it was just pop music. It's not like they were the Joy Division of the late 90s. Even Whale had more weight about them than Garbage.

Report to moderatorYou obviously are just a totally misguided mainstream sheep. Garbage have been an important musical force since their first record. You suck.

Report to moderatorFucking hell losers, Garbage were a MANUFACTURED POP BAND. Just because they had guitars didn't make them any more authentic than the Spicegirls.

Report to moderatorThat a band of as little consequence as Garbage have come to be seen as visionary points to the growing abyss at the center of our culture.

Report to moderatorGreat to see Garbage back and with the steady involvement of the mighty Butch, should be a result to look forward to.

Report to moderatorIts vastly overproduced and stale. Garbage fans would love it.
I liked the first album, Shirley's voice is excellent and they can write good songs but the production is so overdone its stupid. Its Garbage by numbers, you don't need to "reinvent" yourself to sound fresh at all...you just need to stop recording the same songs over and over.
Still there are worse out there and I don't mind any of the songs coming on the radio.

Report to moderatorRidiculous review. This is a great album, a fact most other publications have acknowledged. Go wallow in your faceless lo-fi frippery and leave these glossy sci-fi pop wizards to perform their inimitable expensive magic. A cursory glance at social media. and the consensus is this is a very welcome return for the band, indeed.
